Announcements / Version 0.5.2 released
January 23, 2020, 00:54:43
This is a minor bug-fix release affecting the client only, the server does not need updating and remains at version 0.5.1.

A new thing:

  • Radio recording resume

A fix:

  • Stopping and immediately resuming a recording fixed. In 0.5.1 it would start at the beginning

Notes:

The Raspberry Pi image is now generated using Pi-Gen: https://github.com/RPi-Distro/pi-gen. The only difference you should notice is the new SSH user name: vomp, and password: vompian.

All the notes in the release announcement for 0.5.1 still apply.

Announcements / Version 0.5.1 released
October 29, 2019, 19:49:14
New things:

  • It's now possible to mark as recording as new (deleting the resume data)
  • The recording information screen displays more details
  • When playing a recording, the "previous channel" button rewinds 2s (for interlacing resync (yes, this needs fixing properly))
  • IPv6 support (Raspberry Pi only)

Fixes:

  • Fixed a playback hang due to a threading deadlock
  • Fixed a hang starting playing a recording which has already been deleted on the server
  • Fixed the Raspberry Pi screen going black during pause
  • Fixed a bug moving a recording with special characters in the name
  • Fixed a bug with the advanced menu in options
  • Fixed the stop-time display in the timer information screen
  • Compile fixes for Stretch and Buster
  • Fixed libcec4 support
  • Saved some Raspberry Pi CPU usage in the on-screen-display code
  • Fixed a crash when using subtitles
  • Fixed a crash pressing up too much in the options screen

Other:

  • Server Makefile updated
  • Server sample config file updated

Notes:

The minimum VDR version is still 1.7.35. The maximum known-working version is 2.4.1.

Raspberry Pi models 1, 2 and early 3s are known to work. Later Pi 3s did not work with the 0.5.0 image but I expect they will work with 0.5.1. I haven't got a late 3, if you have and it works please let me know.

Reportedly the Raspberry Pi 4 has no hardware MPEG2 support. I haven't got a Pi 4 so I can't test it. I expect very bad results trying to play MPEG2! It might still work to play MPEG4, I don't know. It is also possible the image won't work at all - reports welcome!

This is probably the last 0.5.x release. 0.6.x will drop support for Hauppauge MVPs and will require at minimum VDR 2.4.0.

Announcements / End support for the MVP?
March 03, 2016, 21:19:11
The latest code does not compile for MVPs, meaning someone would have to work on it to bring it in-line with the new Raspberry Pi vomp code. Given this, the age of MVPs, the general move to HD, the low price of Raspberry Pis, the work involved in keeping two/three/many platforms in sync - how about we say thanks and goodbye to the great Hauppauge MediaMVP, leaving the last working version at 0.4.1, with server 0.4.1?

Feel free to vote and comment!

Announcements / Version 0.4.0 released
February 23, 2013, 21:54:46
Finally, version 0.4.0, and a solution for HDTV: the Raspberry Pi.

The major change for this version is Raspberry Pi support. Marten Richter has ported vomp to the pi and it's really good. Thanks Marten!

A very incomplete list of other minor changes not including all the things I can't remember:

  • Radio channel switching and teletext bug fixed
  • Network logging
  • Full duplex patch
  • Server UTF-8 support
  • New recordings are shown with an asterisk in the recordings list

Thanks go to Marten and all the people who are testing and helping and providing patches. Apologies go to the people who have provided fixes which have gone into this release which I have forgotten. Please email me and I will update this list of changes.

Thanks to the Raspberry Pi folks for making the MVP successor, just in time.

I have modified the patch listed here: http://linuxtv.org/pipermail/vdr/2012-April/026061.html
to compile with VDR 1.7.32 and decode the oddly compressed EPG on Freeview HD (UK).

The Huffman tables are not included in this version.

If someone else is already maintaining this patch please let me know ...

VOMP General / MVP / New things
June 24, 2012, 18:43:03
A few minor updates..

The forum website is now available over experimental IPv6. If you see any problems please let me know.

I have put the makedevenv scripts into git, and they will be downloadable this way only from now on. It will make changing things in the makedevenv system much easier.

Also, not new but... This forum is available over https if you want to access it securely. It's a self signed certificate, but at least you don't put your password over the wire in the clear.

I have switched the source code repository to git hosted on this web site, away from CVS at SourceForge. Gitweb for the repository is available at http://git.vomp.tv , the repositories can be cloned like this:

git clone http://git.vomp.tv/<projectname>.git

MartenR, who has worked on vomp for Windows and vomp for various other things, has a new vomp client git repository here which he will be using to experiment with a client for the Raspberry Pi.

I have updated the makedevenv script to version 9 to download the vomp client source code from the git repository.

Thanks to forum member dingo35 for identifying a problem with the makedevenv script on Debian Squeeze causing it not to work with bash 4. I have updated the packages to fix the problem, it is available as makedevenv version 7 on the web site.

I have also modified the script to download crosstool's package requirements from the loggytronic web site instead of GNU to speed things up.

QtVomp / Tumbleweed
October 24, 2008, 13:18:13
Oooh, quiet in here...
#15
Philipp Müller has created QtVomp, a Vomp client for Linux. He would like to annouce the following.

This is the alpha 1 release of a Linux desktop client for Vomp.

Only the source tar ball is provided, so you need to compile QtVomp by yourself.

Requirements:

  • Qt 4.4
  • Phonon-Xine-Backend out of KDE 4.1 (only runtime dependency)
  • VDR running Vompserver-plugin 0.3.0
  • Installation instructions are in the INSTALL file

Supported features:

  • Channel list with EPG entries
  • Playing live-TV
  • Playing recordings
  • Playing MP3 files

Usage of the client:

The structure is similar to the normal Vomp usage, so it should feel familiar. Beside of the normal behavior of Vomp and common mouse handling of lists, buttons, etc following is not so obvious:

  • Channel switching is done with Page Up/Down
  • Double click on the video area switches in between full screen mode and windowed mode
  • In full screen mode ESC returns to windowed mode
  • In full screen mode Alt-F4 is deactivated

Known limitations:

  • QtVomp cannot find the VDR server automatically, when run on a PC where an instance of VDR/Vomp is running. Use the command line argument -s <ip-address> then.
  • Recordings don't support any jump forward / backward in the file, This is a "bug" in Phonon in combination with the VDR recordings format
  • Some MP3 files don't play (Phonon issue)

Please report everything - success, failure, ideas to the forum for open discussion.

If a file doesn't play or no output in general, please test as follows:

  • Have a look into the README file, some exceptions are explained in detail
  • Does the file play with Dragonplayer? If not it is a Phonon issue.
  • Is the Phonon-Xine-Backend default (see KDE System Settings - Sound - <tab> Backend)?

Changes:

* Config files now in [vdr-config]/plugins/vompserver
* Code cleaning patches from Alex Pipelka
* Totally rewritten internationalisation support from MarkC. Much easier to edit language files now

* And much work by Marten Richter to keep the windows code up to date alongside the linux stuff, Thanks Marten!

Many things have been forgotten off this list I am sure. Many thanks to all who contributed.

The next few versions hopefully won't take so long as they won't get bogged down in such major protocol rewrites.

Apologies for those wanting particular features in this version that aren't there, we both know who you are.

Enjoy!

VOMP General / MVP / Testers Needed!
June 01, 2008, 22:15:16
As of this post I have completed my to-do list for the next release of vomp, it is now safe to run as far as I know. Much has changed since the last release and so, I would like anyone who does or could run a bleeding edge cvs version of vomp to have a go and give it some testing.

One thing to note - you will need to copy the l10n directory from the vompserver plugin source directory into the vompserver plugin config directory. To put it another way, in the same directory as your vomp.conf and vomp-mac.conf, there now needs to be the l10n directory.

If you run "cvs upgrade" on the server you will need the "-d" switch to build new directories.

If all goes well I will properly release it in a couple of days.

Thanks!
#19
You probably won't be running CVS code at the moment due to the state that live TV is in, but in case you are, and FYI for the future, the vompserver plugin now defaults to finding its configuration files in [vdr-config-dir]/plugins/vompserver/

The change fixes the bug which causes VDR to print the message about the plugin calling cPlugin::configDirectory() which is not thread safe.

If you use the -c option to vompserver to change the config directory you should be unaffected.

VOMP General / MVP / Red, Green, Yellow, Blue
November 20, 2007, 23:03:18
So let's get these colour buttons sorted....

In live TV we have the following functions:

  • EPG
  • Summary of current programme
  • Audio channel selection

In recording playback we have:

  • Summary of current programme
  • Audio channel selection
  • 10s / mark skip back
  • 10s / mark skip forward

As "summary of current programme" and "audio channel selection" are common to both modes it would make good sense to have them on the same colour buttons across modes, which we don't currently have.

I was going to offer to get rid of yellow and blue for 10s skip, but then I found that the old remote doesn't have the required star/hash replacement buttons, so that's not possible.

So I propose:

              Red         Green       Yellow         Blue
-----------------------------------------------------------
Live TV       Summary     Audio       EPG?           EPG?
Recording     Summary     Audio       -10s           +10s

The problem with this is that it moves EPG off the red button (which I guess is hardwired in a lot of people's minds now!) to either yellow or blue...

Are there any major objections to this? If not, which would you prefer, yellow or blue for EPG? (I am thinking blue...)
