Title: Translation Efforts
Post by: Chris on November 12, 2005, 17:35:40
I am creating this thread to keep all discussions on translation efforts in. Also, since SourceForge anonymous CVS updates are slow, I am posting the current language-data.h file here too. When a new language is added I will post the file here and when I need more translations of individual terms that can go in this thread too. If you add a translation to the file you can post it here (tested or not, but say which so someone can test it before someone else adds more to it.)

So attached is the current language-data.h file, it has English, German and Swedish so far.

Edit: Please always see the end of this thread for the latest language-data.h file. Don't download the early ones any more!

And what a busy thread this is! Perhaps it is just us English, Germans and Swedes then :)

So, I got the forums working again. Seems my provider's server suddenly had PHP register_globals turned on, which this forum software doesn't like. Anyway, I found a solution.

Back to the work then..
An EPG is on the way, along with yet more new back-end GUI code that allows things like moving clocks (finally!). So I could do with some words for the EPG. Can either the current translators or other people translate the following phrases please? I then add them into the next release, thanks.

--------------------

EPG
Page up
Page down
-24 hours
+24 hours
Guide / Back: Close
Rec: Set timer
Sel channel
There are no programme details available for this period
No programme details

------------------------

EPG in English is Electronic Programme Guide, is there an equivalent acronym?
"Guide / Back: Close" is referring to what the guide and back buttons will do when pressed. They will close the EPG.
"Rec: Set timer" - as in the record button will set a timer. (It won't yet, but I will put the translations in for when it will!)
"Sel channel" - As in the play button will select that channel

Thank you!

Suggestion for the German Translation:

EPG -> EPG
Page up -> Seite hoch
Page down -> Seite runter
-24 hours -> -24 Stunden
+24 hours -> +24 Stunden
Guide / Back: Close -> EPG / Zurück: Schließen
Rec: Set timer -> Rec: Aufnahme programmieren
Sel channel -> Kanal auswählen
There are no programme details available for this period -> Es sind keine Programminformationen für diesen Zeitraum verfügbar.
No programme details -> Keine Programminformation.

Perhaps some translations are too long or not to the point. Feel free to post better ideas. :-)

Hello!

I add Hungarian to the language file. I'm not have a crosscompiler environment, so I not tested the file myself. But I hope its good.  :)

...and suggestion for the next release:

EPG -> EPG
Page up -> Visszalapozás
Page down -> Elörelapozás
-24 hours -> -24 óra
+24 hours -> +24 óra
Guide / Back: Close -> Guide / Back: Bezárás
Rec: Set timer -> Rec: Felvétel beállítása
Sel channel -> Csatornaválasztás
There are no programme details available for this period -> Nincs programinformáció ehhez az idöszakhoz.
No programme details -> Nincs programinformáció.

Thank you for Hungarian!

Here is a new language-data.h file with the new EPG texts merged in. Swedish EPG texts are still needed!

Hi Chris,

I just tested the new version and i can just say: WOW!!! (http://forum.mdo-games.de/vbulletin/images/smilies/ola.gif)

Some improvements for the german translation:

+ 24 Stunden -> + 24 Std.
- 24 Stunden -> - 24 Std.
Kanal auswählen -> Umschalten
Go: Preview -> Go: Vorschau
EPG / Zurück: Schließen -> Back: EPG schließen

Have you thought about localizing the date/time in EPG?
Perhaps you could also add the programme-times in that "info"-box (not EPG - that one I get now with ne green button).

As always: Thanks for your great work!!!

André

Thanks for those, I have put the new German into CVS.

I have added the EPG localisation issue as a bug on SF, and the programme times on the info box as a feature request.

Latest translations file attached.

Hello!

Here's come an language-data.h with Swedish texts added.
I haven't had time to install 0.1.7/0.1 yet myself and I was a little bit unsure about what the "Go: Preview" means, but I think it's all correct.

(Btw, I had to edit in Wordpad on a Windows-machine so maybe there is some ^M in the file :-(

"Go: Preview" (The 'Go' button)  switches to the chosen channel and displays it
in the preview window within the EPG (resized picture).

Thanks for Finnish and French! I will include them in the next dongle.

Here is the latest language file. Jtk: Could you check the French please? My editor didn't like something about the file and didn't open it properly. I copied out what I could but there don't seem to be any accented characters anywhere.. Maybe they were lost. Other than that, Finnish and French are now added in.

Gerge: Could you (or anyone Hungarian!) translate "Go: Preview" to Hungarian please? Somehow it seems to be the only phrase to be missed out. (My fault somewhere I think).

Thanks for the latest updates. But there is more to do! I have put translation spaces in for everything I could find that wasn't translating properly and here is the result. New phrases are needed for all languages. :)

Addet German Translations.
One String is missing (no good idea), and i am not sure what is the best translation for "Current" here. Any suggestions by the other Germans here in the board? :-)

Title: Re: Translation Efforts
Post by: Harry on May 09, 2006, 07:11:52
haengt vom zusammenhang ab. ohne diesen zu kennen, ist's ein wenig schwierig.

depends on the context.
if this indicates a recording in progress then
"Aktuell" or "Läuft" would be adequate.

cheers
Harry

P.S Who's gonna win the cup?
Title: Re: Translation Efforts
Post by: Chris on May 09, 2006, 12:03:55
It means that the time slot for the timer is now, nothing more. So current could = yes, but active = no therefore recording = no. Also, current could = yes, active = yes, but you don't have enough tuners so recording = no.
Title: Re: Translation Efforts
Post by: Harry on May 09, 2006, 12:48:05
ah, i get it.

however...this is tricky to translate.
"Aktuell" would make the most sense since there's not unlimited
space available for the letters.

Active would be "Aktiv" or "Aktiviert" and
"Recording" "Aufnahme läuft" (too bad we don't have a
progressive form in german!)
Title: Re: Translation Efforts
Post by: muellerph on May 10, 2006, 10:06:16
How about "Jetzt".
If it is about the timer then "Jetzt" which translates to "now" in english would fit as well. No?

Chris, wouldn't then be "now" more accurate anyway as you use it here for explaining the text too?
Title: Re: Translation Efforts
Post by: Harry on May 10, 2006, 10:42:06
"Jetzt" is not so bad either.

however... question at hand is here that a user, who has never
seen the interface before, understands the table at first sight.
hmm... not even sure if this is so clear in english with "Current" ....*g*
as i said.. expressing that the time frame for a recording has been reached
with only one word is tricky in german.
...hehe.... but it's unlikely that the future of VOMP depends on this. ;)
Title: Re: Translation Efforts
Post by: MartenR on May 12, 2006, 07:29:35
Maybe you can use "aufnehmend", it is the german equivalent to recording.

Title: Re: Translation Efforts
Post by: Schnurps on July 16, 2006, 08:32:11
Thanks for that - I think "jetzt" is the best choice.

Do you have a translation for "TCP receive window size"?
What is the difference between "receive window" and "buffer"?
Is "TCP-Empfangspuffergröße" correct?

Schnurps
Title: Re: Translation Efforts
Post by: MartenR on July 16, 2006, 18:58:22
"TCP-Empfangsfenstergröße" is better, because it means not a buffer size but a window size in order to decide, when a packet has to be resended.

Hi,

just a small input for someone who had to endure a good number of bad translations. Please do not translate technical english words.

A "TCP Receive Window Size" should IMHO not be translated, same as you rarely see the word motherboard be translated into Hauptplatine.

Here is an updated language-file with some improvements to the german translation.

@Chris: When will the next version arrive? These days it is very quiet in the forums (due to the hot temperature) - but i am very exited about the future of vomp and esp. the windows-client. :-)

Title: Re: Translation Efforts
Post by: Chris on July 27, 2006, 18:56:27
Thanks for the translation work. I don't know when the next version will be around, it's been so long now since I really looked at the to-do list that I can't even remember what will be in it ;)
My job has been keeping me very busy recently and I have had practically no time for vomp for a long time now. Currently I am away from home on a long trip away for work, so no updates in the near future...

Having said that though, for anyone interested - the CVS version of vompclient now contains a UDP server that can receive remote button presses over the network. i.e. you send a couple of bytes of data at a UDP port on the MVP and it will be exactly as if a particular remote button was pressed. The port number is 2000, the 1 or 2 bytes to send are the ASCII text (not null terminated) of the numbers listed in remote.h for the various buttons.

Hans, thanks for the Dutch, it will be in version 0.2.5.

Can all language people supply (on here as it's just one word) a translation for "Loading..." please?

Attached is the latest all merged in and up-to-date language file.
Title: Re: Translation Efforts

In german it would be "Lade..."

Marten
Title: Re: Translation Efforts
Post by: Harry on October 25, 2006, 07:48:11
i would _never_ translate a progressive form word like "Loading" with
"Lade".

"Am laden..." or "Ladevorgang..." would be more adequate for german.
Title: Re: Translation Efforts

I thing, that comes to my mind, currently there is no translation for "Move" ("verschieben") in the recordings menu, I think that was to be added to language data also.

As promised, here's an Italian version.

It's reasonable, but I'm sure a native would do better.

I mainly did it as I want to recommend some Italian friends to start using it.
