Title: mediaplayer - why mencoder?
Post by: hlob on December 08, 2008, 12:21:33
Hi,
first, thanks for this great addon. I'm no video expert and that's why I'm asking here why mencoder is the prefered solution to transcode the video. Couldn't mplayer be used? Mplayer has that neat remote control feature which would allow easy fast forward etc...
regards, hlob

Hi,
don't think so.
Mplayer is just for rendering videos to a display device. This would require a complete redesign of the vomp architecture (because the MVP does the MPEG decoding and rendering in hardware).
Mencoder is just mplayer's brother (same decoders...) for transcoding stuff.
BTW there is now also support for ffmpeg as transcoder (but of course still with no chance for positioning). see http://forum.loggytronic.com/index.php?topic=248.135 (http://forum.loggytronic.com/index.php?topic=248.135).
I've got some ideas for the positioning stuff (caching...) - but this is a bigger job to be done.

Regards
Andreas

I feared that, positioning would have been too easy anyway ;)
I thought maybe -vo dvb could have been misused but that doesn't seem to be viable either.
So, go on with your ideas about positioning, I'm already looking forward to it :)
